My Horrible Encounter With Dr. Do Good

If you grew up in a typical Nigerian home, you probably might have encountered Dr. Do Good a few times. Dr. Do Good was what my mother called him, she’d say “Dr. Do Good will do good to your bumbum.” Some called him Dr. Brown, Mr. Slim and loads of other names.

Sure, I’d met Dr. Do Good a few times before but this particular day was the worst encounter of all. Growing up, I’d always detested taking drugs always going in favour of the injection instead. Sometimes, my mother obliged me and sometimes she didn’t. I was down with malaria and my mother had made a trip to the pharmacy to buy me some medicine. Camosunate™ was the bane of my existence and that was what she brought home that day. Not only did I hate drugs, I found it impossible to swallow them so I always had to chew them (the horror😫)

I remember a time when I’d just returned from my aunt’s house where I went to play with my cousins. My mother offered me some tea. I was skeptical because I wondered what I had done to deserve this special treatment, but I took the tea anyway. She made me drink all of it in her presence. The tea tasted really weird and I later found out it had been laced with Camosunate™.

But, I digress.

Back to the previous story, before I had even completely chewed the drug, I heaved up all the contents of my stomach. I could tell from her expression that my mom was pissed. Still, she gave me another chance. She handed me another tablet and I threw it all up again. It was a holiday period and her friend’s daughter was staying with us at the time. My Dad and my siblings weren’t around. She asked the girl ( who by the way was two years younger than I was) to swallow a tablet of Paracetamol so I could learn how to swallow the drugs. The girl, her name was Esther. She downed the tablets in what seemed like a millisecond to me. My mom asked me to mimic what Esther had just done with my drugs.

Of course, I failed and vomited once again. That was when Dr. Do Good came in. Perhaps my mother had forgotten that I was sick because she flogged the A out of my name that day😂.

But you know what was most surprising in that experience, I woke up the next day feeling so much better than the day before. The high temperature was gone, my appetite was back. I didn’t feel weak in any way. I didn’t feel sick at all.

Who knew Dr.Do Good could cure malaria? He finally lived up to the ‘Dr.’ in his name.

What do you think of my story?

  1. Yunno, I had my share of Dr Do Good too
But it was whenever I got an injury.

Back then, my childhood was laced with injuries of all kinds: on the head, heel, legs, knees, arm…name it.

Mrs Ofili never disappointed me..she dealt with me whenever I got one 😭😂

    1. It was like I suspected that it wasn’t just ordinary tea but at the same time, I was like nooo. My mother would have made me drink it all regardless. I chose the easy way out 😂😂
