Science, Art or Commercial. Does it really matter?

Hey guys, welcome back to my blog and if you’re new here, thanks for clicking on that link. So, this isn’t the post that I had originally planned for this weekend but I had a  conversation with an old friend last night and I decided to address the issue.

There comes a point in every students life where they have to decide on what path they’re going to take concerning the future of their education. Science, Art or Commercial?

For as long as I’ve been on this earth, there’s always been an unending argument centred on which department is the best. Undue importance has been placed on the Science department. It has been glorified to some kind ultimate department which I think ought not to be.

When I had just graduated from the JSS Three class in secondary school and was on the brink of entering into the SSS One class, I had to make a decision on what department I wanted to belong to. I chose the art department which surprised everyone but myself.

I got questioned a lot about my choice of department. Oh, science is for intelligent people, You shouldn’t be in the art department, you’re qualified to be a science student blah blah blah. Some of my classmates were even surprised that I had chosen the art department. My parents didn’t really care what department I had chosen so long as I was getting an education. But other people felt the need to interfere in my choice. Some teachers tried to change my mind. One teacher even went as far as calling my parents to convince me to change my mind.

Oh, I’m sorry that I’m not interested in formulas and mixing chemicals(insert eye roll). I don’t want to be a doctor, nurse, engineer, scientist or any career science related so tell me why I should be in the science department.

The point is majority of the people believed that Science class was for the intelligent ones and the other departments were meant for the less intelligent ones because apparently the Science department is tougher than the rest. Oh, please. Every department has its own hurdles, no one has it that easy.

No department is better than the other in my opinion, they’re all different. You don’t have to be in a particular department because you’re “intelligent”. You being in the science department doesn’t mean you’re intelligent and you being in any other department doesn’t mean you’re not intelligent. You should only be in the department in which you want to be, end of story.

It’s also annoying how the science students believe that they’re better than the other students. Really, really, really annoying.

You don’t need to look down on a person based on what department they belong to.

So my dear, you can be whoever you want to be and be in whatever department is best for you and matches your passion or interests.

P.S Forgive my sloppy writing, I just wrote it this morning.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts in the comment section.
